As critical an issue as Climate change is to our community, climate change is a part of nature that requires significant and strong action to be able to effectively impact the effects. Simply put, EVERYONE has to conform to lifestyle changes and environmental standards to positively impact the situation and that is seemingly difficult and in some ways, unrealistic. Not everyone is on that train of thought. In terms of how the NS can support and impact the change, I believe we have to find ways to more effectively support and implement stronger policies that would decrease and/or eliminate contributing factors such as, shoreline construction, visitor/tourist traffic impacts etc. - The pandemic allowed for a severe “breather for our shorelines as a result our beaches were refreshed, marine life enhanced, reef and coral were somewhat revived. This should be seen as an example of how we can contribute to an effective contribution to climate change and its impacts. (Hope that made sense)
Disaster preparedness and infrastructure resiliency , especially with regard to hurricanes needs to be addressed. We are an isolated community and can expect to be largely cut off for weeks following a hit by a major hurricane. Safe drinking water, food and community organization and security will be life or death issues. I do not doubt for a moment that we have a community that is kind and resourceful but we need to have plans in place to be able to make sure everyone has potable water as well as some other resources, such as food, and communications.
