The States 30x30 initiative being created by the DLNR/DAR deals with setting aside 30% of our nearshore ocean resources to provide for a rich healthy habitat. The diminution of our nearshore assets/resources is a dangerous trend that needs to be addressed in a proactive context.
Waiale'e should be considered as a cultural resource issue and not a natural environment and open space issue. Just because the area appears abandoned does not allow the rest of the North Shore to expand and claim it as their new play area. The area was actively managed lo'i and loko i'a and kuleana homelots but costs and complicated land systems made it impossible to maintain. How do we bring in the right resource to re-establish life on the land.
We need to address invasive species. Devil weed is potentially one of the worst threats but there are many invasive plants that threaten the remnant pocket of native habitat. Invasive species could be addressed by the military, state, private landowners and other community stakeholders. There are also many protected and native species that need a place at the table as we consider the future of the North Shore. Seals, bats, seabirds, waterbirds, freshwater fauna as well as our corals, reef ecosystems and other coastal inhabitants. What remains of our coastal wetland habitats deserve special attention with regard to protection and restoration. The chance we have to protect and restore Waiale'e can not missed.
