Community Involvement in Renewable Energy
Ensure that utility scale renewable energy projects involve the community early and transparently to address concerns and identify appropriate mitigation and community benefits. This may be furthered by establishing guidelines for community engagement processes and clear expectations regarding when and how developers come to the North Shore community with their project proposal.
Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
Maximize distributed solar energy to further renewable energy goals while preserving agricultural lands and open space. This means encouraging solar PV on rooftops and parking lots, and even developing community-based shared solar projects. Expansion of distributed energy resources will require supporting efforts to improve the power grid’s ability to handle distributed renewable energy.
HECO currently offers customers three customer renewable programs as part of their DER strategy:
For residential and small business customers who want to reduce their bills by installing solar systems that meet specific program requirements.
Community-Based Renewable Energy
For customers who cannot or choose not to install private rooftop solar systems to get some of the benefits of clean, renewable electricity by subscribing to a renewable energy facility.
Generating Your Own Power
For large business and commercial customers who want to generate and consume their own electricity with no system size limitation.
